Zombie Apocalypse [May. 4th, 2012|09:35 pm]
The protagonists of the last three things you read/watched/played are the members of your zombie apocalypse team. How screwed are you?

* "Freakonomics" started watching this on Thursday and finished tonight... Two economists talk about the secret ways data and motivation work...not so great for fighting back, but might be useful for sifting through patterns to determine the cause of the outbreak.  Actually, its a really awesome / thought provoking movie that ranges from cheating in Sumo wrestling to motivating kids to get better grades to unexpected affects of policies.

* "Neverwhere" watched last night; if I get Door plus Richard Mayhew...then I might be okay..especially with later on Richard Mayhew...but then people do sometimes die in that story...so not so sure.  I'm still not sure what was up with the production value of that mini-series.. an A&E production in conjunction with the BBC...and yet...at times it was like an 80s high school art school project.

* "Rizzoli & Isles" watched the other day while picking up my place; hmm...a Boston cop and a medical examiner..well maybe the later can team with the economists; and at least the cop has a gun..something sorely missing from earlier in this venture.

Overall, I think I'm a little lacking in fire power and would be forced to run, and then try to logic the problem out by sorting through data and numbers...but with Door that's a bit less of a problem...so I think I'm fine as long as I get slow dumb zombies and not super fast smart ones...

[movies] Albert Nobbs [Apr. 5th, 2012|07:52 am]

[Current Mood |goodgood]
[Current Music |I can do better than that - The Last 5 Years]

I saw Albert Nobbs (a period movie) with a couple of friends the other night.  Its based off of a 1918 story by George Moore and is about a a woman passing as a man in order to work as a waiter and survive in 19th century Ireland...and about how harsh and brutal conditions were both in the time period and in Ireland.

In the movie itself, America is referenced countless time as a dream place of opportunity.

The movie itself had a quiet pacing, that very much felt like it was from another time period, as many modern movies move fast and quick in an effort to flash! and entertain! short attention spans.  This movie slowed down and focused intensely on small movements, little facial expressions, and tics of its characters.  The main character of Albert Nobbs, was fully drawn, but so were the doctor, and the women who helped run the hotel where Albert worked, and even other side characters that came in and upset Albert's world view.

Glenn Close played Albert, a part she first performed on Broadway over 30 years ago...and she was tremendously good; which both helped and hurt the film at the same time, because Albert the character was awkward with a side of awkward on the side; it wasn’t always comfortable to watch.

To take from a review from the San Francisco Chronicle

"There is an undeniable ick factor, borne in part by Close's viability and detailed and strong acting. If she weren't so good in the role, Albert might be easier to take, but as it stands, she is a convincing, mysterious and, to be honest, repellent person, one who is alert to others in a way that would freak people out."

Still a good movie, and one I would recommend for a quiet bit of something..

Lots of things to wrie, my mind is full of the blue sky [Mar. 26th, 2012|08:44 pm]
[Current Mood |goodgood]

This a couple of really long posts I've been meaning to make; heck, I still want to talk about the games I was in at Intercon...but I also want to write about game mechanics and seamless play, ADD and other things, religious intolerance, a basic me 101 entry etc.

But instead, I figure, for now I will leave that list for future reference to try to pick off over time, and now do a small meme...

Instead a simple meme...Feel like asking me a question? All comments screened unless otherwise indicated; anonymous commenting on.

Measure for Measrure near Harvard Square [Feb. 12th, 2012|10:01 am]
Saw the Anarchist Society of Shakespeareans' production of Measure for Measure at the Democracy Center near Harvard Square on Friday night -

Good show, updated with more modern clothing etc. Very well done, its a longish play, which made me wish for one or two cuts in the material - but well acted and entertaining. The material was funny and presented in a fresh way.

I wasn't so much jazzed about the fact it was Shakespeare but about the people producing it and how very fresh the material seemed. So if you're not a huge Shakespeare fan, don't let that turn you off...you may find you appreciate his work more in this context.

If you get a chance, go see it. It's free with a $5 suggested donation, so you can decide what the performance was worth afterward if you like. Its a fun show.

Remaining performances are: February 17, & 18 at 8pm, and February 12 at 3pm at the Democracy Center near Harvard Square, 45 Mount Auburn Street, Cambridge, MA.

Meme-ity meme [Jun. 15th, 2011|11:23 pm]
Get your own fairy names from The Fairy Name Generator! My fairy name is Hazel Icewand
She protects the vulnerable and brings justice to the wronged.
She lives in places hexed and tainted by black magic.
She can only be seen when the seer holds a four-leafed clover.
She wears black feathers and rose petals and has icy blue butterfly wings.

The longer i'm involved with 7V and go to various events related to it, the more I have become convinced we need a 7 Virtues recipe book...complete with in game like pictures and drawings, just to document and perserve all the truly marvelous food at the events and roleplay sessions....

...cause really, we have some fabulous cooks and bakers among us.

now to bed, as I am stupidly tired right now.

5 things a post makes (second one in 2 days) [Feb. 6th, 2011|10:22 am]
-one or two levels of internal filters fell off last night; which was interesting and lead to some odd turns of phrase.

-the snows have gotten so deep that deer have taken to running on the street in small packs. I saw not 1 or 2 but 6 of them on the drive home last night.

-I'm contemplating picking up or making more late 1890s wear. I'm in one game to Intercon thats roughly that time period which also corresponds to the late bustle period.

-I need to finish my 7v pel.. :p

-and finally, whiskey remains tasty.

(no subject) [Jan. 31st, 2011|05:36 am]
I survived 7v - I knew politics, and fear, but actually did not die.

I seemed to have amazing timing of actually *not*being around when fights happened, barring the Breaker coming by, attempting to harass the Sentinels in game (I'm one of them, so, that is at least...good?.. or something? I don't know).

I do know that everyone did an amazing job in getting the Scarthan vote to come out - and no one was 100% sure how it would come out until the vote actually happened; every contribution counted.  I know other things happened during the event, but most of mine was taken up with the vote, politics, and things related to the family tree (My auntie came to visit!!).

Everyone on plot / staff and NPCing did an amazing job; despite the cold, and the distance between monster camp and Roskin Hall; great thanks to everyone.

I also know that I am amazingly tired, and that having now had a post larp nap; my thought processes are much clearer (Here is your PC card, now lose 20 points), and I'm starting to gear up for a new day,
